2025     small guache and graphite drawings

made with generous support from vermont studio center

When I got to VSC, I tried to unstick myself from MFA-induced exhaustion by combing through old journals and scrolling through my notes app to find bits of writing that might provide a starting place for new drawings. I wrote phrases on notecards and pinned them up in my studio. Thing like:

> Your taste sours in my mouth — fuzzy peach sardine swill
> A touch of sunshine on upturned palms
> You recoil, smiling

I love working with text and story, and I wanted to challenge myself to use my own words instead of making more of what Juliet Hinely lovingly calls “book report art.” Every morning I’d take down a few notecards and use them to begin a new drawing. The result is this series. For me, they wound up being a postgrad coda. This is is the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.
